Vaping in Kenya is legal. All vaping activities and nicotine based products are regulated by the Tobacco Act of 2007. There has been motions to update the regulations concerning sale, promotion and distribution of tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other nicotine products. As of 2025, the Tobacco Act of 2007 is still in effect and no major changes have been effected yet.
Vaping is increasingly becoming popular in Kenya as an alternative to smoking. Research shows that vaping is 95% safer than smoking cigarettes, making it a safer alternative to current smokers. However, vaping isn't with no health risks. It's a pretty new trend that hasn't been around for a very long time. There has been cases of lung illnesses from vaping, injuries from vape explosions, and scientists are still conducting research that will shed more light to health implications of vaping.
What is Vaping, and How Does It Work?
Vaping involves inhaling vapor produced by an electronic cigarette, also called a vape, then exhaling it. The vapor is usually vape liquid heated into an aerosol, forming a cloud of smoke. Vape liquid contains Vegetable Glycerine (VG), Propylene Glycol (PG), flavoring agents and sometimes nicotine (in its freebase form or as a nicotine salt).
So, how does this device work? The main component in the vape is an E-liquid zapped with a coil as the heating element. The whole thing is then powered with a battery that allows for heating the E-liquid once you take a draw with your mouth on the mouthpiece. After heating, the E-liquid turns into a vapor that you inhale. It is just like taking a draw from the cigarette, but for the vape, it is smoother and cleaner.
The vape flavor profiles range from fruity and sweet to creamy and rich. The flavor varieties are endless. You choose what works for you. Regarding nicotine, various vape brands have different nicotine strengths. They range from 0% to 5% and rarely 6%. Vaping offers you a variety of options that suit your mood. Plus, with vaping, you are not burning anything with dry flame. This means you can avoid the many harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke.
